Shop the StoreSupertight took shape in San Francisco in 1979, formed by two pairs of musicians who had unknowingly been heading toward each other for years. Peter and Mike arrived from Philadelphia after cutting their teeth in late-night clubs, chasing bigger ideas and a freer musical landscape. Rob and Chris rolled in from Boston, bringing a sharper, hard-earned intensity from countless gigs in rough bars and college towns.
They met by chance at a Mission District café, where a spontaneous jam exploded into four straight hours of chemistry. Within a week they were a band. They first played under the name The Velvet Fuse, but after a blistering set in 1980, someone described their sound as “super tight,” and the name never left them.
Through the ’80s and ’90s, Supertight built a loyal following with high-energy shows, precision dynamics, and a musical bond that felt both unlikely and inevitable. Their blend of Philly looseness and Boston discipline became their signature. In later years, Rob’s daughter Temma began filling in at shows, expanding the band’s story into a new generation.
Today, Supertight plays selectively — not as nostalgia, but because creating music together still hits like it did the first time they met.
Their mantra:
“Tighter than the universe will allow.”
